“It is our right and our responsibility
to write ourselves into the future”

Counselor Education

If you are looking for a professional home that values who you are as much as what you do, you belong here.

Growing clinicians is part of how we love on & grow our community.

Clinician Development

Caring for our community also means caring for the people who serve it. Oregon faces a critical shortage of Black and Brown health providers, with only 2% of the state's entire mental health professionals identifying as Black/African American. We are here to change that.

Our programs create pathways for emerging and established clinicians to develop their skills, strengthen their leadership, and grow into their full professional potential. When providers are supported, trained, and resourced, we remain in the field.

We provide:

  • Clinical Supervision for Licensure

  • Counselor Leadership Development

  • Clinical Consultation

  • Continuing Education workshops

  • Identity-affirming professional support and mentorship

All of our programs are grounded in culture, community, and care.

Current Programs

Grow Your Own

Grow Your Own, or GYO, is a professional development program created to nurture the next generation of Black, Brown and QTBIPOC mental health leaders.

This program is designed for two groups:

  • Clinicians working toward full licensure

  • Licensed providers preparing to become Clinical Supervisors

GYO offers more than supervision. It is a space for mentorship, guidance, and belonging. Participants receive culturally-affirming support, practical tools, and leadership development to help them grow into confident, ethical, community-centered clinicians.

When providers are cared for, we can better care for the communities we serve. Clinicians who enroll in our GYO program will progress through three distinct stages, with each stage offering knowledge and skills that build the foundation for the next stage of clinician development. Progression through each stage is based upon current competencies and learning needs rather than a rigid timeframe.

  • This apprenticeship model is designed to provide extensive mentorship, training, and career support over a two or three-year period. The program is rigorous, informative, and engaging, with the goal of expanding your competence and confidence as a QT/BIPOC provider.

Practicum Placement for Graduate Students

Sankofa Counseling serves as an internship site for:

  • Doctoral-level students

  • Master’s-level students

Practicum students receive hands-on clinical experience with built-in supervision from our Clinical Supervisor team.

Continuing Education
& Professional Development

Sankofa Counseling offers Continuing Education trainings designed to strengthen clinical skills, meet licensure requirements, and support long-term sustainability for mental health providers.

We believe professional development should do more than check a box. It should deepen understanding, expand capacity, and affirm the identities of the people doing the work.
